As already mentioned, the 1918 influenza pandemic killed up to 50 million people. Other pandemics occurred in 1957 and 1968, well after the development of antibiotics, which turned out to be all but useless against infectious viral strains. Today, we are past due for the next viral outbreak, and many experts in the area of disease control and infectious diseases are predicting that the H5N1 bird flu strain is a likely candidate to make the cross-species jump and become the next infectious agent for humans. |
| That's why estimates of the number of people who could die in the next influenza pandemic are reaching astronomical proportions.
The US-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that between 2 million and 7.4 million deaths would occur globally from the outbreak. But other scientists are offering much higher estimates: one noted Russian scientists estimates that as many as one billion people around the world could be killed by a viral outbreak that's expected to arrive soon. He simultaneously estimates hundreds of thousands would be killed in the United States alone. |
| REPPED: A global influenza pandemic isn't something that most people think about on a day-to-day basis. But it could soon become front-page news, if the fears of the World Health Organization are realized. The group is concerned about the ripening conditions for a global outbreak of a particular bird flu strain currently present in Asia. What makes this situation all the more serious is the humbling fact that the world simply doesn't have the manufacturing or distribution capacity to provide flu vaccinations to many people. |

Herbs: Elderberry prevents the influenza virus from replicating. Adults should take 1 tbsp four times a day and children should take 1 tbsp twice a day. Lomatium dissectum has strong antiviral activity and is traditionally used by herbalists for flu. Take 500 mg in capsule form or 4 ml four times a day. A combination of echinacea and goldenseal can be taken at 500 mg or 2 ml to enhance immune function and dry up mucus. Take 500 mg of oregano oil four times daily or 300-450 mg of garlic twice a day for their powerful antiviral effects. |
| HERBALISM
Croup is often caused by a virus similar to that which causes influenza. See the section on flu (p. 550) for anti-viral herbal remedies. The section on coughs (p. 523) also provides additional herbal remedies to those listed below.
Licorice: A decoction of licorice root can be taken for a few days to alleviate coughs, especially a dry hacking cough. Licorice is a classic demulcent or mucilaginous herb, which coats the throat to alleviate dryness. Boil 2 tbsp of chopped licorice root in 2-3 cups of water for 10 minutes and drink the decoction several times a day. |
| Flu shots are designed yearly to fight the flu bug that is prevalent in a particular year, so immunization is necessary on an annual basis. influenza is spread through sneezing and coughing, when water droplets carrying the virus become airborne and are breathed in by others. It is also passed on through the spread of germs due to poor hand-washing hygiene. Symptoms, which include fever, chills, headache, aches and pains, and exhaustion, begin after an incubation period of one to four days and usually continue for about a week. |

It has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic (traditional Indian) therapies and traditional Chinese Medicine to treat everything from isolated cases of the sniffles to fullblown outbreaks of influenza. Apparently, andrographis is believed to have halted the spread of the 1919 Indian flu pandemic.
Scientific evidence supports that theory. Researchers at the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth in the U.K. conducted a survey of medical databases, herbal manufacturer information and World Health Organization reports to select seven studies that met the criteria for double-blind, controlled trials. |
| If you are practicing good hygiene, eating nutritious foods and keeping your intestines and liver clean, influenza will never become a deadly disease. Getting vaccinated against the flu, on the other hand, is a sure way to sow the seeds for new illnesses in the body. All vaccines are poisonous and, as such, act like time bombs that will explode in due time.

It's been shown to have an antibacterial effect (against Staphylococcus aureus) as well as an antifungal effect (against Candida albicans, or yeast), and even an antiviral effect (against Avian influenza virus). Any beekeeper will tell you that bees are very susceptible to bacterial and viral infections. |

These include yeast infections, simple head or chest colds, influenza, rheumatoid arthritis, hepatitis, herpes, recent inoculations, drug use and pregnancy. There are literally hundreds of millions of people in the world who either have gone through such conditions or are currently experiencing them. Giving them an AIDS test would automatically sentence them to a disease they may not have. That is exactly what we are doing during the humanitarian AIDS campaigns promoted by the WHO and numerous charitable AIDS organizations. |

Later calculations showed that the relative risk of acquiring GBS during the six weeks after the vaccination was ten times higher if you had been vaccinated than if you had never received the swine flu vaccine. |

Many of the 1918 pandemic victims were healthy young adults, in contrast to most influenza outbreaks which predominantly affect juvenile, elderly, or otherwise weakened patients. The young adults had the strongest immunity and, therefore, developed exaggerated immune reaction to the virus, known as "cytokine storm" (a condition when the immune activates too many immune cells in a single place in response to a new and highly pathogenic invader.). The very young and the elderly are not capable of generating such powerful immune responses. |

Since: a) the current influenza vaccines are not effective, b) the exact "bird" flu influenza (H5N1) virus that will "cause" the alleged "bird-flu pandemic" is not known because the H5N1 virus is rapidly mutating, c) the current experimental vaccines are already a mismatch for the current strain infecting chickens and people in Asia, and d) it takes months to convert a detected viral strain into a vaccine, but only weeks for a "flu" to spread to a significant portion of a population in America. |

The official report, entitled National Strategy for Pandemic influenza, goes on to say, "A pandemic, or worldwide outbreak of a new influenza virus, could... overwhelm our health and medical capabilities, potentially resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths, millions of hospitalizations, and hundreds of billions of dollars in direct and indirect costs."

And Native Americans have higher rates of tuberculosis, pneumonia, and influenza. It seems like new examples crop up every month in the scientific literature. The most recent study discovered that African Americans who smoke a pack of cigarettes a day are far more likely to develop lung cancer than whites with the exact same habit.
Now, these statistics don't necessarily tell the whole story. For starters, they don't always control for other differences in these groups that have nothing to do with genetics and evolution. |

The short version of the information found in that book is that boosting your immune system function requires a significant change in lifestyle. The traditional foods, beverages, and biologically active drugs like caffeine that many people consume on a daily basis are immune system suppressors. People who wish to survive the coming flu pandemic will need to stop eating these foods and beverages. All metabolic disrupters must be eliminated from the diet. |

For example, when you have the flu, it's not the influenza virus that alters your behavior; it is your body's immune response to the infection that changes the way you feel. To combat the infection, your body releases a tiny amount of highly active immune material called cytokines. These function to activate your body's antiviral defense system, but they also make you feel sick. Specifically, they make you exhausted, causing you to sleep longer than usual but in a restless, nonrefreshing way. |

Furthermore, the WHO says that the United States currently has no vaccine to distribute to the population that might offer protection from this flu epidemic.

The idea of a cancer vaccine may not be clear to the public since vaccines are usually employed against viruses, such as influenza. However, not all cancer emanates from viral infection, though it is thought that 15% of malignancies have a viral origin. Some cancer vaccine technology seeks to make proteins within tumors antigenic (being able to induce an antibody response).
A vaccine against a major form of cancer is in the making. The papillomavirus is present in 99.7% of cervical cancer cases. |

Today's situation is far more dangerous for the spread of influenza or any communicable disease. We have the perfect conditions for spreading influenza. We have international travel, airplanes where people sneeze and the air gets re-circulated around so that everybody breathes it in. We don't even have viral filters on airplanes. We have people traveling rapidly from one city to the next in a matter of hours. We have cities with very high density, and we have a population with massively suppressed immune systems. |
